Heavy nocturnal showers, flashfloods hit Riyadh

RIYADH: According to media reports, Riyadh received a heavy downpour Saturday night, with rains flooding roads and causing gridlocks.

A heavy overcast loomed over city the whole day.

According to reports, the ministry of education has announced the closure of schools until further orders as roads are inundated in rainwater.

The ministry of civil defence has started rescue operation to bring the stranded residents, especially those who are on the roads, through to safety and provide them with food and shelter.

Earlier during the day residents were happy with the change in weather and enjoying the onset of winter, but later they were alarmed as drizzling into a downpour.

Ruyadh had received light drizzles all day long, with lows of 24 degrees Celsius in the evening.

Temperatures are expected to plummet further on Sunday.
